Continue use of Biphosphonate after an atypical index femur fracture increase fracture in the contralateral femur

Those with atypical index femur fracture should not continue use of biposphonate because recent study found that this could increase the risk of fracture in the contralateral femur. This caution reported at annual meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons 2012, after the researchers from Kaiser Permanente, California, examined Kaiser’s database involved 126 patients with atypical femur fracture in 2007, 2008, and 2009, which is more than 50% of them have been continued bisphosphonate therapy after the first atypical fracture. And because of this very moment there was an increase of continuing of bisphosphonate therapy after the first atypical fracture, the study authors suggested to stop it or it will give a great chance for the fracture in the contralateral femur. While based on the results of their study, compared with continuing … Read entire article »

Causes and cure for male pattern baldness

As previously announced the results of research done by researchers from King’s College London and GlaxoSmithKline, that even they have identified two genetic variants in Caucasians as well as chromosome 20 to increase the risk of male pattern baldness, but it remain difficult to find a cure for male pattern baldness due to this factor. DNA abnormalities that cause parents and children have pattern baldness is a difficult thing to overcome before knowing how this gene works. But, of many cases of hair loss and baldness in both men and women, in general, the role of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) that causes hair follicle to shrink and inhibit the nutrients needed by the hair is a common source of the occurrence of hair loss and pattern baldness. Vaginal prolapse therapy with robotic sacrocolpopexy more cost and longer than conventional laparoscopy

In a recent prospective randomized surgical trial in gynecology, the researchers found that convention laparoscopy for vaginal prolapse therapy still lower in cost and takes shorter than robotic-assisted sacrocolpopexy in operating time. The trial involved 78 women with stage 2-4 post-hysterectomy vaginal prolapse, and randomized to robotic sacrocolpopexy or laparoscopic. Reported in Obstetrics and Gynecology this month, the comparison between these procedure as follows: - Robotic sacrocolpopexy need 67 minutes longer than conventional laparoscopic in operational, including more longer in the time of anesthesia, total operating room, total sacrocolpopexy, and total suturing. - Robotic sacrocolpopexy resulting greater pain than laparoscopic at weeks 3 to 5 after surgery. - More longer of NSAIDs use (20 days) than laparoscopic group (11 days). - More higher in cost ($16,278 with robotic sacrocolpopexy vs. $14,342 with conventional laparoscopic). Potential treatment to prevent lesions of cerebral cavernous malformation (CCM)

Currently, there is no treatment that can prevent the lesions of cerebral cavernous malformation (CCM) or its maturation, which is characterized by grossly dilated capilaries. CCM or cavernous angioma itself can lead to vision or hearing problems, seizures, hemorrhages, and strokes, while current available treatment only in complex vascular surgery. However, the researchers from Chicago Medical Center seen if Fasudil, a Rho kinase inhibitor approved in Japan for the treatment of cerebral vasospasm has a good potential in preventing those lesion development, although it requires additional experiments before initiation of clinical trials. The results of initial experiments conducted on mice showed overall CCMs and individual caverns significantly fewer after treated with 100 mg/kg/day of Fasudil from weaning to 5 months of age compared with placebo, including smaller diameters of lesion. However, the senior author … Read entire article »
